Domaine Ostertag Muenchberg Grand Cru Riesling 2022 is a beautifully precise Riesling from 75-year-old biodynamically farmed vines in one of Alsace’s most distinctive Grand Cru vineyards.

Concentrated yet elegant, it brings together ripe pear, citrus and stone fruit with subtle spice, bright freshness and a wonderfully long, saline finish. With its organic and biodynamic farming, old vines and remarkable sandstone and volcanic soils, this is a wine with real depth and character — and a 95-point Vinous score to match.

This is serious white wine — elegant, complex and built to develop in bottle.

  • ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Domaine Ostertag is one of Alsace’s benchmark estates, with André Ostertag pioneering biodynamic viticulture at the domaine and his son Arthur continuing that approach today. The estate works with a small number of carefully chosen sites, allowing the character of each terroir to come through in the wines.

The domaine’s commitment to organic and biodynamic farming is central to its philosophy, rather than an add-on to the wines.

  • WHAT IS IT?

A seriously special Riesling from one of Alsace’s great Grand Cru sites. Old biodynamically farmed vines give remarkable depth, precision and a beautifully saline finish.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT?

The nose is wonderfully expressive, with pear, candied lime, citrus, floral notes and a subtle smoky character. With air, more complexity emerges: stone fruit, honey, spice and a gently waxy character.

The palate has plenty of substance, but the freshness keeps everything beautifully balanced. Ripe pear and citrus sit alongside subtle spice, with a fine mineral thread running through the wine. The finish is long, precise and delicately saline — classic Muenchberg.

  • ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

The vineyard is the star here.

Muenchberg is a south-facing amphitheatre above Nothalten, with a fascinating combination of pink sandstone and volcanic sediments. The Riesling vines are around 75 years old and have been cultivated biodynamically since 1998, with massal selection and high-density planting.

The grapes are pressed as whole bunches, fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and then aged for 14 months on the lees in stainless steel. No need for oak to dress this one up — the old vines and extraordinary terroir provide all the character it needs.
