Bordeaux and Sustainability – A Greener Glass

Bordeaux has long been known for its superb wines, but today the region is gaining attention for something else: how it’s working with nature to secure its future. From hedgerows to lighter bottles, Bordeaux is proving that great wine and greener practices can go hand in hand.

Farming with Nature

Across the Gironde, more and more châteaux are adopting organic or biodynamic methods, swapping chemicals for natural solutions. Cover crops between rows, ploughing with horses, and composting help vineyards stay healthy while protecting the soils for future generations.

💡 Did you know? Over 27,000 hectares of Bordeaux vines are now organic or in conversion — nearly triple what it was just five years ago.

Agroforestry in Action

One of the most exciting shifts in Bordeaux is the revival of agroforestry — planting trees and hedgerows in and around vineyards. These green corridors help capture carbon, create shade, encourage pollinators, and improve water retention in the soil. They even support grape balance, keeping wines fresher as summers get hotter.

💡 Did you know? A single kilometre of hedgerow can host up to 1,000 different species of insects, plants, and animals — a lifeline for biodiversity in Bordeaux’s vineyards.

Greener Packaging, Greener Future

Sustainability doesn’t stop in the vineyard. Lighter bottles, recycled glass, and alternative packaging are helping Bordeaux cut emissions after the grapes are harvested. The region is working collectively to reduce waste and make every stage of the wine journey more responsible.

💡 Did you know? Bordeaux producers recycle 99% of vineyard waste (like glass, corks, and cardboard) — turning by-products back into useful materials.

Social Sustainability

Sustainability in Bordeaux is also about people. The wine industry supports more than 60,000 local jobs, from vineyard workers to coopers and logistics. Ensuring decent conditions, training opportunities, and rural community support are all part of making the region’s future fair as well as green.

💡 Did you know? Bordeaux’s CSR programme already has over 100 companies certified for their social and environmental responsibility — and growing each year.

Why It Matters

At Feel Good Grapes, we believe wine should do more than taste good — it should feel good too. Bordeaux’s focus on agroforestry, biodiversity, and greener choices is a direct response to the challenges of climate change, reshaping the way wine is grown and shared.
